DESERT BREEZE PUBLISHING: This week, we are joined by Donna Keevers Driver; author. Donna's book "The Path Chosen" will publish in April. First questions: • Where do you draw your inspiration from? Is it dreams? Things you see on television or in movies. Books? People you meet? ~*~~*~~*~DONNA KEEVERS DRIVER: For the story, I usually draw inspiration from problems -- be them present or past, mine, someone else's (be them real or on TV etc), imagined, or a social issue. I long to offer hope, healing, and freedom in everything I write, so if/when an issue touches me in some way, my heart and head join forces, wanting to find a solution or the truth -- with my heart doing most of the talking. I find solutions, and possible solutions, inspiring. At the same time (and I'm thinking of my novel 'The Path Chosen' here -- out April 21 2016), I am inspired by both sides of an argument -- the 'for and against' for each -- and work to show both. (The reader is free to make their own judgement upon seeing both sides, but my characters need to find the best solution for their story -- THAT drives me on.)
For characters, I have contemplated basing characters on people I know, but I usually look for a character to suit the story. If I draw inspiration for a protagonist from a real person, I will focus on the most beautiful parts of their character and use them as my character's strengths. If/when any negative responses or actions are called for with that character, I usually draw on my own response until my invented protagonist 'tells' me they would, or would not, respond in such a way. If I'm looking for an antagonist, I draw on people who have belittled me throughout my life -- then exaggerate what I deem their bad points.
